Day 8 Lewiston ID to Orofino ID

Today's mileage: 44 Total mileage 406
Total climbing 856 feet
Today was flat and fabulous as we pedaled along the Clearwater River. We started out very early to avoid the promised heat of the afternoon. The first 5 miles were a paved path, but eventually we were on Route 12. We had time to read all of the historic markers along the way. The basalt arch is really a fighting ant and yellow jacket. But the coyote turned them into stone to remind the Nez Perce to not fight but share resources. Our next stop was at Jim's Produce for some apricots. Jim also gave Paul a freshly harvested bulb of garlic to ward off the mosquitoes (which have not been a problem for us-yet). As we continued, we needed to cross the river on a bridge being resurfaced. Check out the ladies in their attractive-super-safe-vests. The flaglady turned the lights so that we had no traffic on the bridge. As we continued, the terrain began to change and tall pines appeared. In Lenore we stopped and put our feet in the river. Since the water was in the mid 50's, we did not last long. (See T&K, the water is clear enough to drink here-haha!) As we approached our destination of Orofino, we knew that we were wise to have left early since the heat had arrived. Suddenly there was an open quilt shop, Material Girl, and the heat wasn't bothering me! I made my purchase and Paul arrived with a cold bottle of water from the businessman next door. As small as Orofino is, it has two quilt shops which required a stop at the Wild Hare. All in all, the day was full kindnesses, super scenery, and great riding. Not a bad way to spend a July day.
