Day 14 Columbia Falls to Lake McDonald Lodge

Stats: mileage 39; total climb 763; total mileage 778

So I put the pictures in the last to first, but the story will go in the correct order! We left Columbia Falls at a reasonable hour and headed towards Glacier National Park. The route was on back roads which keeps us happy when there is minimal traffic. We saw where the confluence of the North Fork and Middle Fork of the Flathead River created the Flathead River and it was very cool since one is glacial and the other is not, they are two different colors. After a downhill on Rte. 2 we entered THE PARK!!!!! We were very excited to be closer to the Rockies and tomorrow's challenge. We pedaled along until this earnest ranger informed us that the section we needed to be on to get to the Lodge was closed to bicycles until 4PM. So we tried to take a shuttle bus (purists would consider this cheating-tough!) but, unfortunately, the tandem would not fit on their bike racks. So we sat by Lake McDonald, enjoyed the view, and rested. Promptly at 4 we were off and wending our way to the other end of Lake McDonald. The middle picture is our first spectacular view of the Rockies. I was becoming quite unnerved and Paul was becoming more excited. We made it to the Lodge and after the unpacking/end of the road ritual, we went down to the lake in front of our cabin and had a glass of wine while drinking in the view (2nd picture). After a lovely dinner and a stroll around the lodge, we watched the sun set. It was a beautiful setting but we needed to be rested for our challenge the next morning.
