Day 44 Marion OH to Mt Vernon OH

Stats: mileage 45; total climb: 1222; total mileage 2004!!!!!

Once again the tandem is all packed up and ready to roll. It was another hot and humid day as we pedaled through north central Ohio.
Everything was beginning to look the same and it all looked overcooked-dog-days-of-summer-done. Paul was reduced to taking pictures of the flora during our breaks. So that's the story morning glory!
Then suddenly as we crossed the Kokosing River, we achieved the 2000 mile pedal. We celebrated with this shot. (I still find it hard to believe that we are doing this! And for so long!)
Then we entered Mt. Vernon. What an exceptional little town. First we passed the Rolls Royce factory. They don't make the cars here but they do manufacture a specialized engine for the oil industry.
Then there was this great, although unused, train station.
As we cruised around town, we found a quilt show sponsored by the Knox County Quilt Guild. The show had a delightful variety of quilts both new and antique.
Armed with the information from the quilt show ladies, I headed to Aunt Bee's. It only took a minute to find out that this quilt lady also rides a bike and has ridden the GOBA.
While I got my quilt fix, Paul wandered around town. This festival honoring the memory of the man who wrote "Dixie" was starting tonight. Tomorrow there will be a cupcake eating contest but we will be on the road.
In stead of celebrating the legacy of Dan Emmett, we celebrated with some new friends. A delicious picnic at the home of Randy and Becky. It included some of Paul's favorites: bicycles and pie.
Those below include the hosts for dinner, Randy and Becky and our hosts for the evening, Mel and Dee. We are so fortunate to have met so many wonderful, welcoming people on this trip.

  1. Thats the story morning glory? Guest must still be writing the blog! Did you know that President Lincoln's favorite song was "Dixie" and he had the band play it when the "War between the States" ended? And...it used to be USC's (the first one) fight song...until it became politically incorret. Who knew it was written in Ohio!
