Day 42 Van Wert OH to Lima OH

Stats: mileage: 35, total climb-not much; total mileage 1902

This is the library in Van Wert, Ohio. It is a beautiful building that speaks to a former grandeur. This was one of a number of buildings in town from the late 19th and early 20th century.
During Paul's early morning ride around town, he discovered the local bakery. He said it was tasty but would not elaborate.
The ride out of town was flat and along the the railroad tracks. Today is our 37th anniversary, but this drive-in is out of the question for a date tonight.
So in honor of the day, Paul arranged for something we have not had on this entire trip.....a rainy day. The weatherman said scattered showers, but it did not work that way. Showery weather started 15 minutes after we left the motel. We stopped and had breakfast 10 miles out of Van Wert. And the rain continued. By the time we reached Delphos, the soft shower had become a real rain. We waited out the downpour under an awning on Main St. I got some reading done and Paul wondered around town. He found the Miami & Erie Canal and spent some time in the local hardware store.

When the downpour let up, we left Delphos and headed to Lima (as in the bean not Peru). The shoulder was adequate and the cars were considerate. As we reached the city limits, the rain ended and the sun came out.

  1. Happy Anniversary! So sorry you finally got some wet on your travel, hope it only happens after sundown (as in Camelot) for the rest of your ride. I forget, how is your final lap going to take you? Are you going through PA then south to Baltimore or are you heading further south from Ohio? You're getting close...talk about getting your 'land legs' back, how long do you think it will take before you can stop peddaling in your dreams?...

  2. Betsy,I think its more fun to ride in the rain,it certainly was cooler.
After we cross Ohio we are going to take a rail-trail from McKeesport Pa to Cumberland Md.,then the C&O canal along the Potomac River down to DC. That is almost 400 miles of car free biking through the woods, very nice indeed.
Thanks for thinking of us on our special day, remember what it was like at the party? A great time for sure.

  3. Happy Anniversary Jane and Paul!! You'll certainly never forget this one. I am still enjoying your wonderful pictures and narrative. It's very addicting; I look forward to it every night; sometimes I'm even impatient for it to appear. I'm curious - are you right on schedule, or has there been some tweaking along the way? Think of you every day - be safe!
