Day 41 Auburn IN to Van Wert OH

Stats: mileage 57; total climb: 866; total mileage 1866

Today was the 3 H's-hot, humid and horizontal. Most of the change in elevation was overpasses and train crossing. We did go up and down but the rolling hills of yesterday were gone. In fact by the afternoon, this is how hot our thermometer read!!!!!
But before we left, our hosts, Paul and Susie, made us the most delicious breakfast. If you ever find yourself in Auburn, Indiana this is the place to stay. After fueling up for the day, we did have to leave.
After leaving the Inn at Windmere, we headed southeast. The ride was easy and the shoulders were wide. When we made it to Leo, The Quilt of Many Colors was open and I had fun finding more fabric and participating for a short while in their Million Pillowcase Challenge.
With the new additions to my stash, we continued on our journey. The terrain is flat, flat, flat. Sometimes we were riding down a long, straight road and all we could see were tall, endless rows of corn. Other times it was a sea of soy beans. We may have started in the breadbasket of the US but we are in the salad oil section now.
And then finally, we were in the right place at the right time. There were two different trains going in opposite directions and we were at the crossing. Paul was able to catch this moment.
Not long after this moment, we were on US 30 heading east and at last we reached our tenth state, Ohio. Hard to believe that we have gotten this far.
As we rode into Van Wert, we passed the VFW and they were having a dinner tonight. So once we were off the bike and organized, we walked down the street for the local favorite of beef and noodles. It's an adventure!

  1. Who wants to go biking at the crack of dawn, Jane or Paul? If its Jane I AM blown over! How about opening a B&B in your new life Paul? You can make grits, oatmeal, wheat germ and sticky buns.

  2. Since we are zzzzzz'ing by 9 most nights, Jane doesn't mind leaving early ,especially since I get her coffee most mornings. For you J. we can go later if you wish

  3. Hey, remember how I was describing our local Big Ten universities? U-M is in Ann Arbor, and MSU in East Lansing? And I attended both?

My gut reaction to that "welcome" sign is slogan on a T-shirt sold around these parts:
    WORST STATE EVER

    Hope Ohio treats you well.
